Hi I’m Alexey Gavrilov, founder of GAVRILOV DANCE.
In fall of 2012, I was fortunate enough to meet and work with one of the most inspirational and wonderfully gifted artists I have had the privilege of partnering. She is a little girl who against all odds made her dream a reality.
I met her when she just turned nine. I had never before worked with a child with such profound special needs. She did not know her right from her left, she wore braces on her wrist and ankle, I worried about her lack of balance and coordination. How would she be able to process the information I needed to give her? Would she be able to understand me and how would I be able understand her?
One day we just started to dance. Listen to the music, and move. We practiced every week for three months, communicating both verbally and non verbally and I quickly saw what united us, what can unite all children to others as well as to themselves. The pure and deep rooted love of music and the need to express themselves through dance.
Three months later she danced her dance on stage for the first time in her life in front of two hundred people who gave her a standing ovation. Her dream that day became reality.
Every child is special and an artist. The question is how do we nurture the artist in children with disabilities? How do we provide them with the skills and opportunities to develop to their utmost potential while keeping their spirits alive?
Dance. Dance creates community. Dance focuses on the ability of the individual rather than on the disability.
I am committed to creating a dance arts program dedicated to serving these amazing children that encourages them to overcome their fears, a place where they develop and strengthen their mind and body while discovering the artist in themselves.
With your support, we can open provide this very important arts program to the special needs community and eventually open the doors to the first dance studio of its kind here in New Jersey.
Please join us in giving our community a sense of hope and confidence that their children will have a program available for them for generations to come. I invite you to witness our powerful works first hand through our website, youtube videos, and social media pages.
